How To Treat Oral Thrush: 13 Treatments Professionals Recommend

Natural Remedies and Essential Oils

There are many natural remedies for oral thrush that are safe and effective. Essential oils target fungi that cause oral thrush by altering their cell membrane and therefore preventing them from reproducing.

The essential oils most commonly used to treat oral thrush include tea tree oil, clove oil, thyme oil, and cinnamon oil. These oils can be applied directly to the affected area using a cotton swab, or a small amount of diluted oil can be applied to a toothbrush and used as you would use regular toothpaste.

Tea tree oil is the fastest-acting treatment for oral thrush. It kills off the fungus immediately—but only if applied frequently enough. Tea tree oil should be applied two to three times daily until symptoms begin to subside.

Compresses made with apple cider vinegar have also been shown to be effective in treating oral thrush because they kill off much of the fungus in an infected person’s mouth while also providing a soothing feeling.
