13 Symptoms Of OCPD (Early Warning Signs)

Comorbidity with other Mental Illnesses

People with OCPD often give off positive first impressions—they may be friendly and sociable, well-organized, and successful in their chosen fields. However, OPCD typically arises with mental comorbidities, and overexpressed features will produce dysfunction like any personality disorder. It is estimated that 90% of those with OCPD also suffer from another mental health condition.

A recently published research shows that those with ADHD are at a greater risk of developing OCPD. Because of their deficiencies in executive functioning, they have been shown in clinical practice to construct very stringent norms and criteria for success. Due to years of receiving negative and upsetting messages, individuals have developed an unhealthy preoccupation with doing things in an obsessive way.

OCPD can also be comorbid with manic depression, borderline personality disorder, clinical depression, generalized anxiety disorder, impulse control disorders, and increased risk of drug addiction. In addition, OCPD patients can also develop body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) because of their extreme ideation. Persons with OCPD and BDD may suffer from significantly impaired psychosocial functioning. Common symptoms of OCPD, such as obsessions and perfectionism, are all associated with higher suicide risk. Recorded suicide cases were more common in males than in females.
