13 Symptoms Of OCPD (Early Warning Signs)

Social Isolation

Social isolation is a hallmark of obsessive-compulsive personality disorders; however, in individuals with OCPD, isolation results from prioritizing work and productivity over relationships. They mistrust others only because they can potentially intrude on the individuals’ perfectionism.

Since they are unaware of their behavior, they may be avoided by some of their peers and refrain from engaging in any social activity. They may be perceived as emotionally unavailable, aloof, or disconnected from social norms. Also, social isolation can make them feel emotionally numb and detached from their feelings. Social isolation can amplify loneliness and frustration, leading to an increased risk of suicide cases in OCPD.

Aside from the negative effects on the emotional and social aspects of the individual, social isolation in OCPD can also manifest in their physical health. For example, premature mortality was associated with social isolation to a greater extent than with smoking, being overweight, or being physically inactive. Studies show a correlation between being socially isolated and the risk of dementia 50 percent higher than those without OCPD. Furthermore, the risk of cardiovascular disease was elevated by 29 percent and stroke by 32 percent in OCPD with symptoms of social isolation.
