Uncontrolled Muscle Movement
If nerves in the body’s periphery are severed from their connection to the brain, those nerves may become hyperactive and cause cramping. The damage to the motor neurons can cause symptoms such as muscular weakness. Additionally, acute cramping, fasciculations or involuntary twitching, and shrinking muscles or atrophy may be present in patients with peripheral neuropathy.
Furthermore, the term “disorders of movement” may refer to a wide variety of neurological conditions, ranging from hyperkinesia, which refers to a movement that is abnormally sped, and hypokinesia, which is a movement that is abnormally slowed down. The presence of involuntary muscle contractions characterizes dystonic patients with neuropathy. This might lead to a cyclical or twisting motion as a consequence. Dystonia may affect the whole body or general dystonia, a single body part or focal dystonia, and many joints or segmental dystonia.
Even though dystonia cannot be cured, it may be managed with medication and other treatments to lessen its symptoms. In more severe instances of dystonia, surgery may be necessary to suppress nerves or to regulate certain regions of the brain.
