Bone Marrow Disorders
The bone marrow, or the spongy tissue in some human bones, is a fascinating organ with a very complex function. It contains stem cells that convert into red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, which serve an individual purpose for the body. Unfortunately, when bone marrow disease is present, problems with the stem cells and how they develop blood cells arise, causing haywire in the system.
Blood and bone marrow tests help diagnose what’s wrong with the bone marrow and its components to develop treatment methods depending on the disorder and its severity. They may include medications, blood transfusions, or a bone marrow transplant.
Neuropathy occurs with bone marrow disease in several ways. Sometimes, it is due to an abnormal protein in the blood that causes nerve damage. Other times, it could be a tumor or cancer pressing onto the nerves, causing discomfort. Chemotherapy medications may also cause long-term nerve injury.
When neuropathy occurs with a bone marrow disorder, treatment of the health issue is essential to manage the pain and other symptoms.
