Lethargy
Patients with schizophrenia may feel physically and mentally sleepy, exhausted, and sluggish. This condition is medically referred to as lethargy. Lethargy is the reason why patients with schizophrenia may seem dazed all the time. It is also the reason behind a patient’s extreme mood swings, low energy, reduced cognitive ability, and decreased alertness.
Lethargy among patients with schizophrenia can also cause chest pain, inability to move muscles, fast heart rate, unresponsiveness, and disorientation. Most patients suffering from lethargy may find it hard to recall simple facts like their names, birthdays, or address. It’s also hard for them to keep track of the time and date. Aside from the mental manifestations, lethargy can also have severe physical signs. Some patients may experience rectal bleeding, migraines, vomiting blood, loss of consciousness, and facial paralysis.
Patients must try to reduce fatigue by drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep, reducing stress, and eating a healthy diet. Medications and therapy are also helpful in treating lethargy caused by schizophrenia.
