Mobility Problems
The nervous system continuously communicates to the muscles as the body moves. Certain muscles may contract unnecessarily due to MS damage interfering with these synchronized activities. An uneven gait is a common symptom of spasticity in MS patients. Muscular spasm is an abnormality in muscle tone or rigidity. Muscles in spastic limbs may atrophy from lack of usage, and joints may contracture or freeze in one painful position if they are immobilized for too long. The reduced mobility may hinder everyday tasks and exacerbate other complications of MS, such as skeletal and cardiovascular problems.
On the other hand, the imbalance makes walking challenging and increases the risk of injury. Ataxia is characterized by a swaying, uneven walk because of the lack of balance and coordination of MS patients. Fifty to seventy percent of patients with MS report falls during the preceding two to six months of their treatment. Thirty percent of those people had several injuries to it. deficient proprioception also causes mobility problems in MS patients due to uncoordinated limb movements. A person’s mobility and sense of autonomy may be negatively impacted by falls because of the injuries sustained and the time needed to recover from broken bones or strained muscles.
