Harsh or Abrasive Toothpaste
Toothpaste is an essential part of dental hygiene. It only not cleans the teeth but also the whole mouth. Many ingredients are needed to formulate toothpaste; one of these is its foaming agents. Foaming agents are essential because foam is responsible for distributing the cleansing ingredients throughout the mouth, teeth in between, plaque removal, and other debris found in the mouth. The most common foaming agent is sodium lauryl sulfate. It is a great foaming agent but causes adverse health effects such as mouth ulcers.
Mouth ulcers can be developed using toothpaste with high sodium lauryl sulfate content. The sodium lauryl sulfate can absorb moisture content by drying the mouth. This is because it is too harsh on the skin when left. It can irritate the susceptible soft tissue in the mouth. Some of its side effects are the inflammation or irritation of oral mucosa or the soft tissues, ulceration, and toxic reactivity.
