The 14 Causes of Microcytic Anemia You Should Be Aware Of

Sideroblastic Anemia

Sideroblastic anemia is a type of anemia characterized by the presence of sideroblasts in the bone marrow. Sideroblasts are immature red blood cells that contain excess iron. This type of anemia can lead to microcytic anemia, where the red blood cells appear smaller than normal.

The exact cause of sideroblastic anemia is unknown. This condition may be inherited or acquired. Inherited sideroblastic anemias are rare and tend to be passed down from one generation to the next in families. Acquired sideroblastic anemias can develop in people of any age and are not passed down from one generation to the next.

The most common symptom of sideroblastic anemia is fatigue. Other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, pale skin, cold intolerance, and dizziness, often accompany fatigue. People with sideroblastic anemia may also experience headaches, joint pain, and abdominal pain.

Sideroblastic anemia is diagnosed through medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests, and imaging studies. The medical history is used to identify any symptoms associated with sideroblastic anemia. The physical examination is used to look for signs of anemia and other conditions that may be causing the symptoms.
