Celiac Disease
Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disorder that occurs when the body cannot properly digest gluten. When people with celiac disease eat foods that contain gluten, the lining of the small intestine are attacked by their immune system, which causes damage preventing the absorption of nutrients from food. This can lead to deficiencies in vitamins and minerals, including iron and microcytic anemia.
There are a few theories about how microcytic anemia and celiac disease are connected. Studies reveal that the damage to the small intestine caused by Celiac disease prevents iron absorption, leading to iron deficiency anemia. Another theory is that celiac disease damages the bone marrow, which decreases the production of red blood cells.
Treatment for microcytic anemia generally includes supplementation with iron or other nutrients needed for healthy red blood cell production. A gluten-free diet will also reduce the symptoms of Celiac disease. Individuals with Celiac disease and microcytic anemia must collaborate with a healthcare team to develop a gluten-free diet that meets their nutritional needs.
