LED Screens
While the rays of the sun are one of the most common causes of melasma, different light sources can also potentially cause the skin disorder. For example, LED screens from your laptop, computer monitor, TV, and phone are all capable of causing melasma, though it is not quite as intense as the sun’s rays. For example, most people spend a large portion of their lives seated in front of a computer screen or using their phone, yet relatively few would get melasma as a result. Recently, research has shown that the blue light from LED screens is primarily the culprit for making cases of melasma worse.
While blue light has more of a negative reputation these days, there’s little to fear from LED screens causing melasma. Many types of electronics also use a night light feature, where the blue light is removed, giving the screen more of a red haze that’s easy to get used to after a few minutes. With such features, there’s little to fear from LED screens causing melasma or making it worse. Today’s implementation of smart tech means blue light is hardly an issue.
