Digestive Disorders
Another organ commonly affected by mast cell activation in MCAS is the gastrointestinal tract, which results in digestive discomfort ranging from nausea to abdominal cramping, diarrhea, and stomach pain.
When mast cells are inappropriately activated in the digestive system, it results in allergic-type symptoms and some indications of inflammations. Such symptoms commonly occur due to everyday triggers such as food, medication, stress, etc. But with MCAS, it may happen without any trigger at all.
Patients who complain of digestive discomfort are often referred to a gastroenterologist for further investigation. But if the symptoms come with other recurring episodes of allergic reactions in other organs, a medical professional may recommend examinations to rule out an MCAS diagnosis.
To improve gut health and avoid further distress in the case of MCAS, you should try to reduce your stress, get enough sleep, promote good gut health with effective practices, increase body workouts, and eat a low-histamine diet. But to completely manage the symptoms, patients must be supplemented with the proper treatment.
