Swelling in the Mouth and Throat
The mouth is another part of the body that may typically show the effects of an overproduction of mast cells. When mast cells gather around the mouth and throat, they can cause swelling and pain, which can be central or diffuse, mild or debilitating. It can also cause a distorted sense of taste, ulcerations, and sores.
MCAS is also associated with burning mouth syndrome, a chronic discomfort affecting the entire mouth, causing a feeling as if there was scalding all over. It may appear suddenly or develop gradually. Aside from MCAS, there are other possible causes for a burning mouth syndrome, like nutrient deficiencies, food allergies, certain oral habits, endocrine disorders, and psychological factors. It is sometimes difficult to determine the actual cause, although treatments to reduce the discomfort are available.
Like other symptoms, most of the mouth disorders and discomforts that MCAS causes may happen suddenly, disappear immediately, and reoccur with any known cause. However, if the symptoms are troubling and disabling, it would be advisable to visit a healthcare provider and rule out the actual problem, whether it is MCAS or something else.
