Reduces the Severity of Diabetes-Related Complications
Research has shown that manuka honey can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels. The evidence suggests it may also help reduce oxidative stress in those with diabetes.
In one study published in Diabetes Care, researchers gave select subjects a daily dose of manuka honey for 12 weeks. The participants had type 2 diabetes and were already on two oral medications: metformin and glibenclamide (both used to control blood sugar). At the end of the study, fasting glucose levels decreased significantly, while HbA1c (average blood glucose over time) dropped as well. Additionally, total cholesterol dropped, LDL cholesterol decreased more than average, and HDL increased along with it.
