Irregular Heartbeat and Palpitations
Magnesium deficiency can produce arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and atrial tachycardia. This is particularly dangerous for those with a history of cardiac disease or high blood pressure because magnesium is an essential electrolyte in the body.
Magnesium supplements may be a viable option for those unable to increase their intake through diet alone. Magnesium is also helpful in reducing the frequency of cardiac arrhythmias that may occur during exercise or stress. In addition, anecdotal evidence suggests that magnesium supplementation can help reduce palpitations (a sensation of irregular heartbeat) and facilitate relaxation so they can get a good night’s sleep.
It helps to regulate the amount of calcium that goes into the cells while also being able to relax muscles, so they don’t contract too often. If a person isn’t getting enough magnesium in their diet, this results in hyperactivity leading to arrhythmia.
