Surgery
Typically, surgery isn’t something that’s recommended for those with macular degeneration. When the macula is affected, there’s not much of a tactic to help the eyes get much better. However, a solution does pop up during the advanced stages of macular degeneration. During wet macular degeneration, there’s not much you can do to improve things. When it affects both eyes, and there isn’t much hope of things getting better, one potential solution is surgery, specifically to implant a telescopic lens. It’s a tiny plastic tube meant to magnify your field of vision. However, such a surgery is often considered a last resort, as it has a narrow field of view. It can improve vision up close and from a distance, but the narrow field of view is not a full solution.
That said, it can help sufferers adjust if they live in an urban environment, allowing them to read signs more easily. With the advancement of technology, we can reach a point where advanced macular degeneration can be stopped through surgery. But, for the moment, the telescopic lens is the best option as a last resort.
