15 Symptoms & Sign Of Macular Degeneration (Don’t Ignore)

Empty Areas in the Field of Vision

When a person has macular degeneration (MD), they may notice specific changes in their field of vision. These changes can be a warning sign that MD is affecting the sight and should be checked by an eye doctor immediately.

The field of vision is the area a person can see without moving their eyes. It’s divided into four quadrants: upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right. The center of each quadrant is called its macula, which gets damaged first with MD.

A healthy macula provides central vision, allowing us to read or see fine details like faces and close-up objects and colors across our field of vision. However, when this part becomes damaged from MD, you may experience blurry or dimmed images in one or both eyes when looking at objects directly ahead rather than straight ahead (known as tunnel vision).
