Migraines are common symptoms of low sodium. The results can be devastating when people have insufficient amounts of sodium in their bodies. While most people know that migraines are often related to stress, some people don’t realize that it’s also associated with diet. If a person is experiencing migraines, it’s essential to understand what the body needs and to make adjustments accordingly.
Migraines occur when blood vessels in the head dilate and produce too much extracellular fluid. This causes vascular pressure to increase, which manifests as pain. In addition to the lancinating pain, migraines accompany nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.
While there is no cure for migraines per se, they can be managed with a combination of lifestyle changes and medication. The most common cause of migraines is consuming processed foods containing nitrates and refined sugars. Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables will help a patient transition from these foods into a healthier diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Drinking alcohol can also trigger migraines because it dehydrates the body; if they think this may be the cause, they should try eliminating alcohol from their diet.
