Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis
One of the most common causes of low magnesium is having a disease that prevents a person’s body from absorbing it properly, like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract. Ulcerative colitis is another type of IBD that affects the colon and rectum.
People with Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis may experience symptoms such as diarrhea or constipation, cramping and stomach pain, weight loss, or weight gain due to not eating enough food because they feel nauseous after meals. Also, this includes blood in the stool, abdominal swelling; nausea and vomiting; fatigue due to chronic inflammation in the body.
