Pale Skin and Dark Circles Under the Eyes
Pale skin and dark circles under the eyes are other symptoms of low ferritin levels. The pigment in a person’s body (melanin) is produced by red blood cells, and insufficient iron can cause a lack of melanin production. This makes the skin look pale or greyish-yellow in color, but one may also notice dark circles under their eyes and hollow eye sockets due to poor circulation from low hemoglobin levels.
Also, if a person’s eyes look sunken, that’s a cause for concern. The lack of collagen causes the connective tissue under a person’s eyes to become weak, resulting in puffy bags that make them appear smaller than they are! It also reduces the size of fat pads that provide support for the upper eyelid, which means that when this tissue dries out, it looks like there’s no padding at all. This gives people a “hollow” appearance around their eyes when they’re packed up with watery liquid.
