Sudden Food Sensitivities
Sudden food sensitivities are a common symptom of low ferritin. However, this hypoferremia can also be an early sign of a more severe condition, like celiac disease or Crohn’s disease.
Sudden intolerance to certain foods is one of the most common symptoms because it develops quickly and often doesn’t appear in other cases where people have a slow buildup of iron levels over time. A study published in the Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology found that people with low ferritin levels were more likely to experience sudden food sensitivities. The researchers concluded that these findings suggest that gluten intolerance may be related to low iron stores.
If a person suddenly begins experiencing sensitivity to certain types of food that they didn’t have issues with before (e.g., dairy products), it’s essential to see a doctor right away so they can rule out other causes for this sudden change in diet.
