Numbness or Tingling Sensations
Whether sitting in one position for too long or leaning on one arm while sleeping, numbness and tingling sensation are usually nothing to be concerned about. However, if one experiences numbness and tingling frequently, or if accompanied by other symptoms, it could signify something more serious.
Low electrolytes typically cause the pins-and-needles feeling. This is because electrolytes play an essential role in nerve function. When electrolyte levels are low, it can cause the nerves to become damaged or dysfunctional. This can lead to numbness or tingling sensations in the upper and lower extremities.
Individuals who frequently experience numbness and tingling in the extremities must see a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions. Low electrolyte levels can sometimes be caused by medications, including diuretics and thiazides, and medical conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease.
One of the primary causes of electrolyte imbalance is inadequate sleep. When we don’t get enough sleep, our bodies don’t have time to recover properly from the day’s activities. This can increase stress hormones and inflammation, resulting in electrolyte imbalances. Ideally, one should aim for seven to eight hours of sleep per night.
