Craving Salt
Some people suddenly crave salt even though they just ate a big meal. It’s strange, right? While some of these people generally avoid processed foods and work hard to eat healthily, their salt cravings can make them feel that their bodies are somewhat betraying them.
There’s a scientific reason for salt cravings. When cortisol levels are low, the body tends to crave salty foods. Besides regulating stress levels, it’s also involved in electrolyte balance and blood pressure regulation. So, when cortisol levels are low, people may experience electrolyte imbalances and low blood pressure, which can lead to feelings of fatigue and dizziness. So, to compensate for these feelings, the body craves salt, which helps raise blood pressure and gives a temporary energy boost.
However, there are more long-term solutions to low cortisol levels. Consuming too much salt can exacerbate the problem by further disrupting our electrolyte balance. For individuals suddenly craving salt, it’s best to see a doctor to check cortisol levels and get an accurate diagnosis.
