Ravenous Hunger
Hunger is the body’s way of signaling the brain that it is experiencing a sudden blood sugar drop. When the body detects a shortage in blood glucose, it triggers the release of the stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine. These stress hormones are responsible for firing emergency signals and warning signs like hunger. If not appropriately addressed, this can lead to overeating, obesity, heart problems, and other severe health conditions.
If a person still feels hungry after a meal, they are eating the wrong food. Some great choices to soothe the hunger caused by hypoglycemia are yogurt, fruit, cereal, crackers, bread, and milk. And since most of these episodes happen during nighttime, a healthy snack before bed can help maintain a person’s sugar level during sleep.
The recommended carb intake is between 15 to 20 grams for each snack and 40-65 grams for heavy meals. However, people with existing health problems should consult a doctor or dietitian first before changing their diets.
