Madelung’s Disease
A tumor is a mass or lump of tissue, while a lump is a small, rounded protuberance on an organ or structure. Madelung’s disease is a congenital disorder that can cause lipomas throughout the body. The cause of this condition has not been determined.
Tumors are composed of tissue that has grown abnormally and without order or coordination, which can interfere with normal function. An example would be if you were to get tumors in your brain. Since your brain controls your central nervous system and every other part of your body when these tumors develop, they can affect every single system in your entire body as well as all of your organs and tissues. In addition, tumors are formed when cells divide uncontrollably instead of growing normally.
From a technical standpoint, Madelung’s disease (also called Madelung’s deformity) is a disorder of bone growth characterized by enlarged thumbs and big toes and multiple large masses (gigantism) on the front of your legs. This can also be associated with an abnormally large rib cage, thickened skin on the palms and soles, or pain in one or both knees.
In this case, Madelung’s disease refers to an abnormal growth of lymphatic tissue causing swelling of the upper arm and shoulder. The cause of this disease is unclear and is often diagnosed after a lump has appeared on the arm without immediate cause. Madelung’s disease is one possible cause of lipoma since this disease can obstruct lymphatic vessels, leading to arm swelling.
