Hereditary Multiple Lipomatosis
Hereditary multiple lipomatosis is a condition in which a single gene mutation causes the body to grow too many fat cells. They are lipoma cells, benign tumors that develop in the body’s fatty tissue.
This rare condition usually has no health effects outside of cosmetic issues related to specific lipomas. However, if you have some other form of cancer, it may affect your prognosis for that cancer.
Children can inherit this condition from their parents. When this happens, it can cause symptoms early on in life. It can result in hundreds or thousands of tumorous growths starting as young as 10 or 15. However, some people may start experiencing symptoms as early as two or three. The most common places where these growths appear are on the arms and legs, but they can crop up anywhere on the torso, including around the belly button area and inside the mouth.
When you have inherited this condition, you will want to get it diagnosed immediately so you can start treatments as soon as possible. This is especially true if you have young children at risk of developing symptoms early on in life. It’s important to note that while the cause of this condition is genetic, it can also be caused by other factors like smoking or asbestos exposure.
