Bad-Smelling Urine
A person with a kidney stone may notice that their urine has an unusual smell. This is because the kidney stone is made up of calcium and other minerals, which can cause some nasty-smelling urine. The odor is so strong that the person with kidney stones might consider it embarrassing to pass the smelly urine in front of others.
The reason that this smelly urine happens is that the urine is not made up of just water and minerals. Instead, there are other chemicals and substances in the urine as well. The substances in the urine may include urea and ammonia (which have very strong smells), uric acid (which also has a stinky smell), and waste products from protein breakdown.
These chemical substances make it easier for people to detect when someone has been passing stinky urine—even if they cannot see or hear them passing their pee. When they notice this stinky urine, they may wonder if it was caused by something wrong with their kidneys or bladder.
