Keratosis Pilaris: The 11 Best Treatments You Should Know

Retinoids

Topical retinoids, creams made from vitamin A, prevent clogged hair follicles by accelerating cell turnover. Topical retinoids include medications like tretinoin (Avita) and tazarotene (Avage). Your doctor may advise stopping topical retinoid therapy or selecting an alternative treatment if you are pregnant or nursing.

Retinoid-containing skin creams are excellent for individuals with mild pigmentation, acne, or wrinkles. But before using a retinoid, those with moderate to severe acne scars should consult a board-certified dermatologist. People with dry or allergic skin are probably not ideal candidates for retinoid-containing product use.

Ask your dermatologist about other treatments more focused on treating a condition called rosacea if you have a lot of skin redness or irritation and should avoid using retinoids. Use retinoids exclusively at night because they increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Also, wear sunscreen on all exposed skin during the day. If you have sensitive skin, choose a sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.
