Discoid Lupus
Discoid lupus, also known as discoid lupus erythematosus, is a persistent autoimmune disease of the skin. A severe rash is one of the symptoms, and it usually worsens after exposure to the sun. The rash can appear anywhere on the body, but the neck, scalp, feet, and hands are the most common sites. In severe cases, irreversible scarring, discoloration, and hair loss might occur.
Discoid lupus has an unknown specific cause. It is believed to be an autoimmune condition brought on by hereditary and environmental factors which cannot be transmitted from one person to another. Discoid lupus is not the same as systemic lupus. Systemic lupus causes a mild rash and damages the internal organs, while discoid lupus does not harm internal organs. However, the rash is significantly more severe.
A skin rash might appear as a small pink area or as raw and red skin. Some symptoms include circular lesions, thick scales on the skin and scalp, blistering lesions, peeling, skin thinning, and light or dark skin pigmentation. Symptoms can be remitted after a flare-up. Upon clinical examination, doctors will likely suspect discoid lupus. However, a skin biopsy is frequently required for diagnosis.
