Constipation and Digestive Issues
Iodine is an essential mineral that the body requires, but it’s not stored in the body. So if a person doesn’t get enough iodine in their diet, then the thyroid gland cannot make enough thyroid hormones, and as a result, symptoms of hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone) may develop. One of the main symptoms of hypothyroidism is constipation.
These issues are connected because the body needs iodine to produce a hormone called thyroxine, which helps regulate metabolism and energy levels. If the thyroid gland is underactive due to an iodine deficiency, it can’t have enough of this hormone and may experience symptoms like constipation.
If a person is suffering from hypothyroidism, they can take steps to help alleviate symptoms. The first step is ensuring they get enough iodine in their diet. They can do this by increasing the amount of iodized salt they eat. If not enough, they may need to take an iodine supplement.
