Hair Loss
People may notice thinning of their hair, especially on the top of their heads. This is a common symptom of iodine deficiency. However, hair loss can also be caused by other health issues like stress, diet, and genetics.
Most men under 40 have some degree of male pattern baldness, so it can be hard to tell whether the hair loss is due to a lack of iodine or something else. However, if they notice thinning hair on the top of the head, consider getting tested for an iodine deficiency.
In some cases, hair loss may be reversible. For example, if they are diagnosed with an iodine deficiency and begin taking a supplement, their hair may grow back. Similarly, if they are diagnosed with an underlying health issue that is causing hair loss, treating that condition may help restore it.
If a person has noticed patches on the scalp that appear to be thinning out or have fallen out altogether, they should consult a doctor before assuming that it’s due to iodine deficiency. A doctor can advise how to treat this condition and help determine if other conditions may also need treatment.
