Weight Gain
Iodine deficiency can cause weight gain. That’s because iodine is essential for metabolism, or the body’s ability to break down food into energy. So if a person doesn’t get enough iodine, the body may be unable to process all the nutrients they eat and will start storing them as fat instead.
Iodine deficiency can also cause hypothyroidism (low thyroid function), which has been linked with weight gain in multiple studies. Some of these studies have found that people who are overweight or obese are more likely to have low thyroid function than people who aren’t overweight or obese, a finding that suggests that low thyroid function might play a role in causing obesity.
Getting enough iodine could help keep the metabolism running normally if they already have an underactive thyroid gland. This ensures it doesn’t have trouble processing all the nutrients from foods like sugar and fat. However, if this happens too quickly after a meal, it could worsen some symptoms, such as feeling tired/sluggish or having difficulty concentrating on tasks. This occurs because our body needs time for digestion before absorbing nutrients into cells throughout our body.
