Topical Medications
Topical medications are also available for ingrown hair removal, which are beneficial for tackling ingrown hairs that have already formed. These topical medications work by reducing inflammation and killing bacteria in the area where an ingrown hair has begun; this helps prevent further irritation or infection.
Hydrocortisone cream is often used to treat irritation, inflammation, and itching caused by ingrown hairs. Apply this over the area with a clean cotton ball twice daily until a person no longer feels any discomfort or pain. Be sure to follow the packaging directions; consult a physician before taking any medications containing hydrocortisone cream if pregnant or breastfeeding.
Benzoyl peroxide is another standard treatment for folliculitis and ingrown hairs. It kills bacteria in hair follicles that cause infections like folliculitis or acne breakouts around the skin’s surface (aka inflamed cysts). However, because benzoyl peroxide can be harsh on sensitive areas like the eyes and genitals, it’s best to use this option sparingly. It is advised to use it once every few days and avoid contact with mucous membranes when applying it externally.
