Nausea

Nausea refers to stomach discomfort and the urge to vomit. It’s usually a symptom that many causes can trigger. But often, they can be prevented. For example, some may feel nauseous due to being highly sensitive to a specific food. Others might experience the condition due to motion sickness. Other triggers are gastroesophageal reflux disease or heartburn, viral or bacterial infection, medications, dietary regime, ulcers, and pain.

Feeling nauseous occasionally without accompanying symptoms isn’t a cause for alarm and will usually go away by itself. However, if the condition persists for more than a few days or you feel severe chest pain, intense headaches, or sweating, it’s vital to seek emergency treatment because these are signs of a heart attack. It’s also best to get in touch with your doctor if you experience breathing difficulties, confusion, a stiff neck, and nausea.

The triggers determine the proper treatment for feelings of nausea. For example, taking stomach-acid reducers may alleviate nausea if conditions like GERD are causing it. Dramamine and scopolamine patches are also used to help relieve motion sickness. It’s also good practice to remain hydrated throughout the episode, as it will prevent dehydration once nausea begins to subside.
