Fatigue
Fatigue is generally characterized as a feeling of overall tiredness or lacking energy. Not to be confused with drowsiness or sleepiness, it’s generally a symptom of mental or physical health conditions that can range from mild cases to severe ones. It can also result from poor lifestyle choices, such as an unhealthy diet or physical inactivity. If proper nutrition, rest, and exercise cannot resolve the problem, something else could be involved. Thus, speaking with a medical practitioner is advisable to determine and treat the cause effectively.
Some medical conditions that may result in the onset of fatigue are anemia, arthritis, fibromyalgia, infections like the flu or the cold, Addison’s disease, hypo and hyperthyroidism, insomnia, eating disorders, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, cancer, and emphysema. In addition, specific mental disorders may also cause fatigue, such as anxiety, seasonal affective illness, and depression.
The recommended treatment method often depends on what may be causing the fatigue. For example, medication might be prescribed to alleviate its symptoms if it’s due to a specific condition. If it’s because of obesity, the doctor might recommend exercise to shed the excess pounds. The key is to address the issue early to avoid further complications.
