Rapid Weight Loss
Rapid weight loss happens when a person loses about one percent of their body weight per week. Losing more than one to two pounds per week can be rapid, but it is still within reason. While rapid weight loss isn’t directly related to IBS, symptoms of the condition can still lead to a decrease in weight. For example, those with IBS can lose weight rapidly if they don’t watch what they eat, and their stomach becomes irritated, which leads to frequent diarrhea. Also, when the body loses fluids, it can lead to rapid weight loss.
When a person with IBS develops rapid weight loss, its necessary to consult a doctor to determine what kinds of food would be safe to consume and prevent the weight loss. They can be placed on a low FODMAP diet. FODMAP is the acronym that stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. The diet may consist of eggs, meat, certain types of cheese, rice, oats, and quinoa. They must also eat fruits such as grapes, pineapples, and strawberries and vegetables such as potatoes, eggplants, and tomatoes.
