12 Symptoms Of IBS (Early Warning Signs)

Excessive Flatulence and Eructation

Those with IBS can also experience excessive flatulence and eructation. Flatulence refers to the act of passing gas through the anus. Eructation refers to belching, burping, or passing gas through the mouth. It can be quite discomforting and embarrassing to suddenly pass gas at the most unfortunate times during the day.

Farting or passing gas more than 20 times a day is considered excessive flatulence. When an individual ingests food, drinks a mouthful of water, or swallows their saliva, there’s always an accompanying amount of air that they can take in. Over time, the gas builds up in the stomach, and the digestive process releases gas, adding to the buildup. As a result, one must get rid of the gas buildup, and they have to either fart or burp to relieve the pressure.

If a person with IBS want to manage and prevent excessive gas, they must modify their diet, and avoid eating hard-to-digest food such as beans, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. If the person also has to contend with lactose intolerance, they must avoid anything with dairy. Also, they should refrain from drinking carbonated beverages.
