Bloating
Bloating is the condition where the belly feels tight and full. Bloating can indicate the onset of constipation. It can also be due to small intestine bacterial overgrowth, gut sensitivity, gastroparesis, or gynecological disorders. Most people describe the feeling of bloating as if they have a balloon inside their stomach.
An individual with IBS suffers from bloating because they have a lower tolerance against bacteria, and have a difficult time transporting gas in the GI tract. Bacteria create toxins that can cause gas to build up in the belly area, which can expand the gut leading to a bloated appearance. In addition, it can be unsightly and uncomfortable as the gas will try to leave the body.
It’s necessary to determine the underlying cause of bloating to treat and manage it properly. For example, if bloating is due to constipation, an individual can take laxatives and softeners to help with the condition. They can also try mixing the diet with more fiber and roughage to help motility. If the cause is excessive gas, they must review their food intake and avoid spicy and high-fat foods. Those suffering from persistent bloating must come for a consultation and a more thorough evaluation.
