Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is a surgical skin planing procedure that removes traces of scarring, acne, skin and tissue irregularities, and hyperpigmentation. It is a process typically conducted by a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist. It uses a rapidly-rotating device that removes the outermost skin layer and promotes the growth of new skin cells. As a result, the skin that grows back is typically smoother, firmer, and younger-looking.
The procedure guarantees a decrease in the appearance of fine facial lines and can remove surgical scars, acne scars, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Dermabrasion can be done on its own or can be in combination with other cosmetic procedures to ensure better aesthetic results. Dermatologists recommend dermabrasion for people with fair skin tones. People who have darker skin tones are more susceptible to scarring and discoloration.
Dermatologists use local anesthetics to numb the patient undergoing dermabrasion. If the skin condition to be treated is large enough, they can also use sedatives and general anesthesia. Skin that has undergone dermabrasion will look and feel blotchy and sensitive for a few weeks. After undergoing such an intensive procedure, it will also be more prone to enlarged pores, acne, redness, swelling and irritation, and other skin reactions.
