Azelaic Acid and Salicylic Acid
Azelaic acid and salicylic acid are both efficient and safe treatments for controlling and preventing acne. Their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory qualities provide skin with an added boost. Combined, these two ingredients—each very powerful on their own—can provide excellent results. This pair is a blemish-fighting superpower since azelaic acid helps by erasing dark spots, while salicylic acid works best at cleansing pores.
Azelaic acid is an acid that is naturally produced by yeast. It’s antimicrobial in nature. When applied twice daily, a 20 percent azelaic acid gel or cream appears to be as effective as several common acne treatments. Azelex, a prescription form of azelaic acid, is an option for use throughout pregnancy and when breastfeeding.
Additionally, it can treat the discoloration that some types of acne cause. Skin redness and slight skin irritation are common side effects. Meanwhile, salicylic acid, available in wash-off and leave-on forms, may help prevent clogged hair follicles. Several studies demonstrate its efficacy. Minor skin irritation and skin discoloration are side effects.
