Green Tea
Green tea has a history of reducing bodily inflammation. According to a 2017 review, using green tea’s anti-inflammatory characteristics topically may help treat mild-to-moderate hormonal acne. For some individuals, consuming green tea or applying green tea extract topically can help lessen the redness, lesions, and itchy skin that pimples cause.
Catechins are compounds found in green tea. These plant-based substances, known as polyphenols, have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. In addition, they combat free radicals. The polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which has been linked to a reduction in acne and oily skin, is particularly abundant in green tea.
Aside from possessing anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial characteristics, EGCG lowers lipid levels and has anti-androgenic effects, which makes it helpful in reducing sebum excretions in the skin. This is because the body naturally creates androgens, and sebaceous glands are stimulated to generate more sebum when androgen levels fluctuate.
Hormonal acne may result from excessive sebum clogging pores and promoting bacterial growth. EGCG breaks this cycle. Meanwhile, consider drinking tea in addition to your topical skincare routine for a more all-encompassing approach. Using lotions and gels with at least 2 percent green tea extract is also beneficial.
