Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is a water-soluble vitamin found in many foods, including bananas, beans, beef, chicken, fish, pork, rice, spinach, and sunflower seeds. It is also available as a dietary supplement. Vitamin B6 is important for a variety of chemical reactions in the body. For example, it helps the body use proteins and carbohydrates. In addition, vitamin B6 helps the body make red blood cells and antibodies to fight infections.
Excessive vomiting can cause vitamin B6 deficiency because the body absorbs vitamin B6 less efficiently when there is too much stomach acid. Taking vitamin B6 supplements may help prevent or relieve vomiting caused by this condition.
Furthermore, vitamin B6 can be used to treat nausea in breastfed infants for whom antidiarrheal drugs are inappropriate. In addition, research suggests that giving an infant vitamin B6 rather than dextrose (sugar water) may reduce the risk of infantile colic or constipation that sometimes occurs with breastfeeding.
