The Brandt-Daroff exercise is a simple, effective way to reduce the symptoms associated with vertigo. Vertigo is often caused by a problem in your inner ear, which can affect your balance and cause you to feel like the world is moving around you. These exercises help to strengthen and stabilize your inner ear, which improves your sense of balance and reduces the severity of vertigo symptoms. In addition, these exercises are easy to do and can be done anywhere, anytime.
First, close your eyes and sit or stand up straight. Next, slowly tilt your head from side to side for about 30 seconds (left, right, left, right). Now tilt your head forward for 30 seconds. Finally, tilt your head backward for 30 seconds. Repeat these steps until you feel better, or about 2-3 times in one session. You should also repeat these steps as many times per day as feels comfortable for you—even just once is beneficial.
The Brandt-Daroff exercise teaches you how to properly move your head so that it doesn’t lead to further issues like neck pain or headaches. Because it helps improve the position of the ear canal and stimulates tiny muscles in the ear that control balance, it can also be effective at treating mild cases of vertigo caused by the inner ear. However, if you are experiencing dizziness or vertigo that is more severe, then it’s best to talk to a doctor before doing any of these exercises.
