Avoiding Alcohol
Moderate to severe cases of vertigo may require medical treatment, but in milder forms, the use of home remedies may be sufficient. One of the most common factors in vertigo is alcohol consumption; many people experience dizziness or unsteadiness after consuming alcohol. This is because alcohol can stress the inner ear’s semicircular canals, which are responsible for balance.
The alcohol just exacerbates vertigo symptoms. Since alcohol slows down your entire central nervous system, it makes the inner ear’s information seem even more unbalanced by comparison. So when you combine alcohol consumption with an episode of vertigo, you end up feeling even sicker than if you didn’t drink.
The American Academy of Otolaryngology recommends avoiding alcohol if you are experiencing vertigo; this will help to decrease pressure on your ears. However, if you must consume alcoholic drinks, do so in moderation and avoid beverages with carbonation, which increases pressure in your head—this includes beer, sparkling wine, and champagne.
