Honey
A dense and sweet substance created by bees, honey has been touted the world over for its health benefits. Studies suggest that consuming raw honey may aid in many things, from allergies to wounds. It’s also known for being able to fight off infections. In one review, researchers found Manuka honey to have the capacity to kill bacteria due to the properties that it contains, like defensin-1 proteins and hydrogen peroxide, supporting its antibacterial activity.
It also helps to relieve cough and cold symptoms. In one study, they found honey to be effective at minimizing children’s coughs at night. Another study that was made a couple of years later evaluated whether or not a milk and honey solution can be used as a treatment for acute coughing in children. They concluded the solution to be as effective—if not more so—than many of the over-the-counter medications marketed to address this problem.
Beyond that, honey has also been used to treat a range of ailments, injuries, and illnesses, including hiccups, stress, weakness, frequent urination, bad breath, dermatitis and eczema, wounds, burns, cuts, asthma, sleep disturbances, vision problems, dysentery and diarrhea, vomiting, elevated blood pressure, obesity, vision problems, and arthritis.
