Turmeric and Curcumin
Turmeric is a traditional Indian spice widely used by locals to add flavor, color, and spice to their dishes. Aside from its culinary benefits, turmeric is a natural remedy for several diseases. It has been used to treat digestive issues, respiratory diseases, depression, allergies, arthritis, infections, and skin conditions. Turmeric’s healing properties are all because of its active compound, curcumin. Curcumin has amazing anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and antifungal properties.
Existing testimonies and anecdotal evidence have linked the connection between curcumin and thrush. Furthermore, all of turmeric’s healing properties are essential in treating thrush. This urged experts to conduct laboratory and experimental studies to solidify this connection. An example is an animal study conducted in 2010, wherein researchers used turmeric extract to treat oral thrush among mice. This study proved that turmeric (because of curcumin) could actively destroy non-albicans and albicans species of Candida.
Moreover, experts have found that curcumin works best when used alongside piperine, another plant compound found in black pepper. It makes the absorption of turmeric easier for the body. However, most of these studies are small-scale and are conducted on animals. Deeper and more extensive human research is still needed to understand the extent of curcumin’s potential against thrush.
