Massage
To aid drainage, massage the region while using the lid wipes. The part should be massaged lightly with clean fingertips. One way to encourage drainage of the meibomian glands, the oil glands along the eyelid, is by gently massaging the outer eyelids for a few minutes each day. As soon as the stye drains, keep the whole area clean. Stop if massaging the area is painful.
Also, this can be done after a heat compress, which can soften the swelling. Place a warm compress on the afflicted eye for 10 to 15 minutes twice daily. After applying the compress, gently massage the irritated bump with a clean finger or fingertip to break up any clogged oil glands. This will lessen the discomfort and irritation, and the stye may heal more quickly.
Be careful not to apply too much pressure or pop the stye. A stye cannot be popped, rubbed, scratched, or squeezed. Popping a stye increases the risk of injuring the eyelid by exposing the wound. Doing this can cause the eye infection to spread to other areas of the eyelids or the eyes. Scarring on the eyelid may become pigmented or develop scar tissue or a hard lump. Antibiotics will be required if that occurs.
