Warm Foods and Fluids
Warm foods act similarly to warm compress, it aids in the reduction of inflammation in the nasal passageways. For instance, tea or broth introduce liquid into the body, allowing for the thinning of mucus for easier secretion. Warm foods can also contain herbs and spices, like black pepper or ginger, that will help further clear the nasal passageway. It can be consumed as frequently as one might need, and continuously consuming it has no inherent harmful effect. Caution should be taken when handling warm or hot food because it can cause accidental skin burns or mouth sores.
By either consuming or drinking beverages, taking in the fluid allows for the mucus in the nostril to thin out and become moist, making it easier to expel. In addition, the cilia in the sinuses can perform their work if the mucus is thin enough. Dehydration makes the mucus thick, making it harder to move and expel. If the mucus is removed or reduced in the sinuses, this lessens or prevents the chance of infection from occurring.
Most commonly, colds are also accompanied by sweating and expulsion of liquids, so staying hydrated avoids the risk of dehydration. Contrary to popular belief, 8-10 glasses, although a good goal to set, are not necessary when trying to keep a person hydrated. Simply drinking when feeling thirsty and having a water bottle or drink at the ready should be enough to avoid dehydration.
