OTC Medication
There are a lot of over-the-counter (OTC) medications that can be taken to cure a common cold and influenza associated with a stuffy nose. Decongestant drugs alleviate stuffiness and sinus pressure by decreasing inflammation in the nasal passages. Products like naphazoline and phenylephrine are available as nasal sprays; phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine are available in tablet form.
Some multi-symptom cold treatments may also include antihistamines, which help reduce nasal congestion and sneezing caused by allergies. Look for allergy medicine that has both an antihistamine and a decongestant to combat the symptoms of a runny nose and watery eyes.
On the other hand, menthol and camphor rubs are typically recommended when you have a cold. The vapors within these rubs can reduce inflammation within the nasal passages. It should mainly be applied in the chest and not in the mouth or even around the nose because the rub has the risk of being absorbed by the skin and can cause irritation. However, caution should be taken when consuming medication. Also, consider the dosage when not prescribed by a physician. Some medications lose efficacy over time if they are used regularly due to the body developing a tolerance to them.
