Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Research has shown that psoriasis patients can benefit from omega-3 fatty acids. Therefore, patients are advised to include more omega-3 fatty acids in their diet. Foods like salmon, tuna, sardines, flaxseeds, herring, walnuts, and chia seeds are some of the natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
Experts explained that the anti-inflammatory effects of omega-3 fatty acids could help reduce systemic inflammation, which is the reason behind the discolored flakes and itchiness of the skin. A recent study on females with psoriasis showed that patients who added omega-3 fatty acids to their regular diet have fewer and milder symptoms. In addition, 45 percent of the subjects improved their overall skin condition.
Supplements like fish oil are also considered healthy and safe ways to increase omega-3 consumption. In 2018, a study was conducted to test the effectiveness of fish oil in treating psoriasis and other skin conditions. The results were impressive, showing that 87 percent of patients who took fish oil supplements showed drastic improvements.
However, the available data is still insufficient to solidify the connection between psoriasis and omega-3 fatty acids. So, it is best to consult a doctor before taking supplements or changing the patient’s diet.
